This master thesis was written as part of the Master of Science (MSc) in eBusiness and Digital Marketing program at the International Hellenic University.
Nowadays, digital transformation is a growing trend both in the public and private
sector. With the fourth industrial revolution, every industry such as education,
banking, health, governments, and many others is being transformed digitally [73].
Our research is focused on the investigation of the concept of digital
transformation in the public sector and specifically, in the European Union
Institutions, Agencies and Bodies (EUIABs). Given the increasing importance of
digital transformation and its effects on organizations and societies, this dissertation
tries to provide an overview of the current state of digital transformation at the
EUIABs.
To dive into the situation in each institution we organised structured interviews
with managers responsible for the digital strategy realm of their organisation. Each
interviewee shared valuable information from their perspective outlining the
objectives, governance structures, challenges and successes of their digital initiatives,
alongside highlighting the implementation processes and communication approaches.
This master thesis is organized into six main sections. First, we introduce the
historical evolution of digital transformation, the second focuses on the theoretical
background and important aspects of digital transformation. In the third section, we
present the scope of this research and the methodology we followed. Further analysis
of the interview results about EU Institutions, Agencies and Bodies is provided in
section four before presenting the discussion, and conclusions in section five and six,
respectively.
