European Banking Perfomance During The 2007-2010 Financial Crisisen
The financial crisis of 2007 to the present is a crisis triggered by a liquidity shortfall in the United States banking system. It has resulted in the collapse of large financial institutions, the bailout of banks by national governments, and downturns in stock markets around the world. The crisis rapidly developed and spread into a global economic shock, resulting in a number of European bank failures, declines in various stock indexes, and large reductions in the market value of equities and commodities This paper examines the performance of 137 banks in 26 European economies, all members of the EU-27, for the years 2005 – 2009 based on their public financial accounts. We examine some bank specific variables to determine whether these banks exhibit behavior and profitability associated with each financial year and thereafter with macroeconomic factors and finally we adhere all these data. Findings of the study confirm what is more or less known to everyone. We observe a negative relationship (negative correlation) between bank profitability and the two latest fiscal years, the Tier 1 capital, the loan loss reserves to gross loans ratio, and the GDP. At the same time there is a positive relationship (positive correlation) among bank profitability and logarithmic total assets, net loans to total assets ratio and the personnel expenses to total assets ratio. The results indicate that an appropriate policy and regulatory framework may be a necessary condition for significant progress to be made in order to avoid.en
